Take Heed is an interactive performance featuring two wearable cocoons connected via an Internet of Things (IoT) network. These innovative garments, designed to interact with each other, utilize 9 Degrees of Freedom (DOF) sensors to detect the wearers' movements. The sensors transmit signals that control kinetic panels and embedded LED lights within the cocoons, creating a responsive and immersive experience.
The cocoons serve as containers for their wearers, defining a transitional space of liminality. This space symbolizes a journey through uncertain times, shifting the agency of neurodivergence towards individual autonomy and renewal. By enveloping the wearer, the garments create a personal universe where the interplay of motion and light responds to and enhances the wearer’s actions.
Take Heed is an interdisciplinary project that combines programming, electronics, web databases, and experimental fashion design. The performance was presented at Labsessions #17 and supported by various organizations, including SAF, FASA, CUAA, CSU, CCSL, and the Textile and Materiality Cluster.
The research behind Take Heed was showcased by Technoculture, Art and Game as part of Ada X's Slow Tech programming in December 2020. This project was co-created by Isabelle Charette, Amélie Charbonneau, Nina Parenteau, Liam Mansfield, and Mélina Lopez-Racine.
