Crip Time Travel is a 3D digital animation inspired by Ellen Samuel’s essay “Six Ways of Looking at Crip Time.” This work explores the concept of time through the visual metaphor of spoons drifting across an aqueous surface, challenging traditional linear representations of time. The floating spoons, set against a fluid background, symbolize the delicate balance required to manage one’s own needs while navigating the constraints imposed by daily life.
The animation reflects the ongoing negotiation that many neurodiverse individuals face, where self-care and the calculation of personal limits become a daily struggle. The ephemeral nature of the spoons, as they drift and disappear, illustrates the transitory essence of both time and energy. This representation highlights the struggle to be gentle with oneself amid constant demands and expectations.
Crip Time Travel was presented as part of Queercab at Buddies in Bad Times Theatre, renowned for its commitment to developing and showcasing voices that challenge sexual and cultural norms. Additionally, the work was accompanied by audio description (AD) by Superior Description Services, ensuring accessibility and enhancing the sensory experience of the animation.
