Temporal Devotions (work in progress)

Temporal Devotions is an ongoing project exploring the embodied experience of time through 3D modeled animations. The project features three distinct animations, each lasting 20 seconds and presented in a continuous loop. These animations depict a pouring cup, an egg timer, and a kitchen scale, each rendered in Blender and set to be transferred into augmented reality (AR) software for display on tablets or smartphones, through recognition of the silhouettes of metal sculptures.

Temporal Devotions invites viewers to engage with these representations of time through augmented reality, offering an interactive experience that deepens the understanding of how time is perceived and experienced. The project not only reflects on personal temporal experiences but also encourages a broader contemplation of how time is navigated and honoured in diverse ways.

Inspired by Alison Kafer's (2013) concept of "crip time," the project aims to honor and reflect the ways in which neurodivergent individuals experience time. Crip time highlights the natural variations in temporal and related resources that are essential for daily activities. Each animated sculpture serves as an altar, representing different facets of my personal experience with time.

Rhythm: The first altar symbolizes rhythm and is modeled after a graduated beaker. The beaker's interior features irregular engraving lines, evoking both the practical use of kitchen measuring tools and the sacred quality of clerical chalices. This piece reflects the uneven, personal rhythm of time experienced in daily life.

Waiting: The second altar embodies the act of waiting, represented by an object shaped like an egg timer. This sculpture merges the symbolic resonance of a relic with the everyday familiarity of a kitchen timer, capturing the patience and anticipation inherent in waiting periods.

Stasis: The third altar represents stasis and is modeled after a small kitchen scale. Like the other pieces, it is crafted to resemble a cherished relic, highlighting the concept of time as a static, yet meaningful presence in our lives.

A portion of this ongoing project has been graciously supported by the Conseil des arts de Montréal.
